There are a whopping 34 spells to earn at Hogwarts Legacy. Some of them will be powerful and instill fear in your enemies, while others will have a well-balanced balance between combat effectiveness and functionality.
As you play through the main story and countless side quests, you’ll unlock these spells regularly. After shooting them a few dozen times, you’ll start to get a sense of which ones do the most damage, which ones are used most frequently for puzzle-solving and exploration, and which ones are the most fun to cast. This tiered list will help you understand all of the spells at your disposal, so you can make the best choices for your play.

Class spells + S
These spells were given the highest ranking due to their overwhelming power and usefulness in battle. While you’ll spend a lot of time exploring Hogwarts Castle and the massive heights surrounding it, you’ll also spend a lot of time in battle. Whether you’re taking out a hunter camp or defeating a Pensieve Guardian in a Keeper Trial, having powerful spells at your disposal is vital as it can be the difference between life and death.
Avada kedavra She is the strongest of the three as she can kill any enemy in the game with a single hit. ancient magic It’s not quite as strong on larger enemies like trolls and area bosses, but it still packs a punch and can even cut the largest health bars in half. Finally, Petrificus totalis Any dark wizard or goblin enemy can be hit by sneaking up behind them and remaining unnoticed.
S class spells.
S tier spells consist of the most powerful and practical combat spells. Each of these spells will be used regularly in combat due to their effectiveness in many combat situations and their short or non-existent cooldown.
Throw out the old magic They can be used to pick up objects and throw them at enemies, and are capable of instant kills and massive damage to enemy health. This spell does not have a cooldown, but it is limited by the many throwable items around. Bombarda It is a massive damage spell that explodes when connected, capable of striking multiple enemies and blasting them away. confringo Can hit one enemy with a lightning bolt and can deal splash damage when upgrading. And Defendo It will slash enemies, dealing massive damage, and can be upgraded to hit multiple enemies in a single line.
Outside of these damage spells, one of the best spells you will use is Protego. It acts as your shield, protecting you from most attacks, and when paired with a well-timed parry, you’ll throw stupid, which deals massive damage and incapacitates your enemy. Finally, Revelio It is a spell that does no damage, but it is absolutely necessary, as its spell class would suggest. When casting, you will be able to see any puzzle items, locked doors, chests, and items that can be thrown and loot. She’ll probably run around casting this spell like a madman in just about every situation, which is why she made the S Tier list.

This level of spells has a nice mix of modest damage, support and utility. Expiliarmus It allows you to snatch wands from even the strongest dark wizard’s hand, or weapons from your non-magic enemies. Decendo And depelso are the most powerful of the Power-type spells, allowing you to smash an enemy into the ground while dealing splash damage, or blast them into each other or off a cliff, respectively.
Crucio And Imperio They are the other two curses, outside of Avada Kedavra, that you can learn in the game, and they are both very useful prop-type spells. Crucio deals damage over time to the enemy it hits but is most effective when combined with other attacks because it will spread the damage over multiple enemies. On the other hand, Imperio can take control of the enemy’s mind, preventing some of the most powerful enemies from attacking you, and forcing them to attack their comrades for you.
transformation It’s the final control-type spell you’ll learn, and it will turn the enemy it hits into a random object like a barrel. While it doesn’t deal direct damage on its own, it then allows you to pick up that thing and throw it at someone, dealing damage to the initial enemy and anyone it hits. Upgrades will also allow you to turn them into explosive barrels and increase damage.
Finally, disappointment It allows you to be mostly invisible. This spell is very effective at avoiding conflict, but it also pairs well with the one-hit spell, Petrificus Totalis. When used correctly, you can take down an entire group of enemies without ever being noticed. This spell is also useful for opening certain doors and chests and plays a role in several main quests.
Class B spells
These spells tend to work better in support of or in combination with other spells, or are used more often for puzzle-solving and exploration. Gelasius It will freeze enemies in place and, when combined with another attack spell, will smash the enemy and deal moderate damage. incendio It throws a ring of fire around you, incinerating anyone caught in the blast. While not the most powerful spell, it is very effective for crowd control, especially against enemies that are weak to shooting like spiders and reasoning.
Basic ejaculate It is naturally the most common attacking spell you use. It does not require cooldown and is moderately strong in terms of damage. They are also used to chain together long attack combos, allowing you to not allow the enemy to recover while you finish them off. Livioso And Mantra ‘Akiu’ Both immobilize the enemy in the air, and the latter pulls them towards you. These pair well with other attack spells like Descendo or Depulso, and can be upgraded to grab multiple enemies at once. They are also commonly used in puzzle-solving and platforming scenarios, making them a great option to equip on a regular basis.

These spells probably won’t get used much, but they do serve their purpose on the job. Hamoura It allows you to open doors and chests. While you don’t technically need to use this spell for most of the game, it does allow you to get some great gear and explore areas that might otherwise be inaccessible.
Aristo Momento And flippendo They work similarly in combat, both of which allow you to temporarily incapacitate an enemy. The first is more effective in this regard because it will slow them down to a near stop and last longer. While the latter will also come in handy in some puzzles. Finally, Lumos It is easy to obtain in a few scenarios. First, it will allow you to see better in dark areas. It is also useful in dispelling a demon’s ambush, and in solving the mysteries of the Moth’s mirrors and some of Merlin’s experiments.

Finally, we come to D-level spells. These spells are strictly functional types and aren’t used very often either. Reparo Lets you repair the sometimes destroyed bridge or object. Wingardium liviosa It allows you to move objects freely but is almost never thrown directly. This is because you can turn Accio into Wingardium Leviosa simply by holding down the button. This makes equipping Wingardium Leviosa on your quick spells completely irrelevant.
